Change Management

Whatever the development model may be, software engineering is definitely a dynamic process that requires frequent iterations within and between project phases, often leading to adaptations and changed requirements. Therefore, managing change becomes pivotal for keeping a project focused and on track.

Changes are often in the areas of

• Scope and content of the project
• Functionality
• Graphical interfaces and user guidance
• Technical runtime requirements
• Non-functional requirements e.g. regarding performance

Change management is the effort to allow useful and necessary changes into a project while avoiding that the development process turns into a chaotic endless-loop. Therefore, all change requests have to be centrally gathered, analyzed and evaluated regarding their impact on efforts and time lines. Project managers and clients can then decide on this basis whether changes should be accepted, postponed or discarded. The change management process has to be outlined at the very beginning of a project.
